HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLED REPORT. The Department of Agriculture has received ti:e following cablegram, dated August 6, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London : MEAT. Market, remains very firm indeed for lamb, for which demand is good. Discharge from steamers slow, and all available stocks going into consumption. "J” grade July-September shipment quoted at £3B 10s per ton, and sales have been made at this price for August-October shipments'. New Zealand market more active and fair business has been done at following , prices: Highpoints, August-October shipment, £35 ?0s; fair, July-September and AugustOctober shipments, £34 and £35 per ton. NEWTON KING LTD., REPORTS. At Douglas on August 1, a good yarding of cattle was met with spirited enquiry throughout, prices remaining firm in consequence. Yearling and dairy cattle made up the biggest portion of the offering and practically everything sold, yearling heifers 30s, better quality do £3 2s 6d, £3 13a 6d, Jersey do £5 12s, £6 Bs, springing heifers £9, dairy cows £lO. £lO 10s, £l2, backward cabers £7 15s, £B, £9. At Stony River on the same day we conducted a dispersal sale of Mr. F. R. Sole’s dairy herd. Although only a moderate attendance we report an excellent sale, the large herd of 70 cows, which were for the most juirt HolstelnS and Shorthorns, averaging £l5 15s. At Inglewood on the same day we conducted a dispersal sale of a contracting plant, stock, etc., on account of Mr. W. Thompson. Tl:e attendance was good, and we report a keenly contested sale throughout. The ‘ horses were a good lot and drew attention I from all parts of tho province, the 5 best selling from £4O to £55, others with age I Hold to £3O. The drays etc., were also largely sought after. Other quotations: Dairj ?cows up to £l6, and yearling heifers £2 15s. ; At Stony River on August 2. a crowded • yarding accounted 'to a certain extent for a j weakening in values, this being particularly jso for yearling classes. Enquiry was flrmi i and steady for empty heifers and these sold !on a par with late sales. Dairy entile were inclined to drag but prices were not affected to any great extent. On the day satisfactory business was done, in both the store and dairy sections. At Ol.au on 3rd inst., the bulk of the yarding consisted of dal»y heifers and on the whole a satisfactory sale was made. Enquiry was for the most part local and prices compared favorably with those ruling on Ihis side of the mountain.
