DISCUSSED AT KAIMATA MEETING. The vexed question of policy was discussed at the annual meeting of shareholders of the Kaimata Dairy Company on Monday evening, when there were present advocates of both the selling and consigning policy. The chairman (Mr. A. E. Burwell), in asking the meeting for an opinion, said that though this was the usual thing to do, he did not think much of it. It, of course, saved the directors’ faces, but they were elected to manage the business and were supposed to be in touch with matters in connection with it. He thought they should adhere to the consignment policy, and it was a had policy to chop and change. The people at Homo would be chary of offering any high prices next season. A firm which had offered a shilling and a
fraction last year sold as soon as ever they bought and made a profit of 2| per qent. Somebody had fallen in, and buyers would be very chary of offering. Mr. T. Casey moved as a recommendation to the directors: “That if a good price were offered they should sell.” Tn further discussion an amendment was moved by Mr. Burkhart: ‘'That the company should continue to consign.” He said that in earlier years they had one year lost by consigning and next year lost more by adopting a selling policy. Mr. Doyle moved as a further amendment: “That if a good offer were made the company should sell half its cheese and consign the remainder.” Then the amendments were put to the meeting, the voting showing a variety of opinions, but both were lost on a show of hands, and Mr. Caney’s reeommendaI tion was carried. During another discussion the chairman remarked- “We [ were all calling out for a free market, ! and what we would do if we had a free ! market. We would have been far better off if we had taken lOd from the Government.”
