FORTY-FOUR-HOUR WEEK. By Telegraph—Press Assn —Copyright. Received August 9, 7.20 p.m. Sydney, August 9. In connection with an application to extend the forty-four-hour week to the railway service, counsel for the commissioners stated that the working expenses of the railways and tramways for the past year had increased by £1,640,000 over the previous year, largely as a result of increased pay. A reduction in hours would mean a further large increase in expenses.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.
