IRONSAND SMELTING.

EXPERIMENTS IN ENGLAND. A cable from London yesterday reported that Mr. Massey will visit Darlington on Saturday, "August 20, in connection with important experiments in smelting New Zealand ironsand. About the beginning of May last the steamer Port Hacking shipped at New Plymouth some 20 tons of ironsand for London. The. destination of this sand was the works of Messrs. Thomas Summerson and Sons, Ltd., at Darlington, and it is to see that particular sand smelted that Mr. Massey .is to visit that city. Messrs. Summerson and Sons have already with Taranaki ironsand and proved to their own satisfaction that the sand can be smelted on a commercial basis by an electrical process. These further experiments will be carried oat in the presence not only of Mr. Massey, but also of Sir James Allen and an expert appointed by the New Zealand Government. It is with the firm of Thos. Summerson and Sons. Ltd., that Mr. P. Scott Leggatt, who has been negotiating with the New Plymouth Borough Council with respect to the hydroelectric scheme, is associated as a director, ami he wants to take a portion of the power developed for the purj»ose : of smelting ironsand at Moturoa. The result of the experiments on August 20 will be awaited with interest.
