COUNCIL OF NATIONS.
ALLIANCE WITH JAPAN. NEW AGREEMENT PROPOSAL MAY BE DISCUSSED. By Teiecraph —prei» Assn.—Copyr:ff!t. Received August 8, 5.5 p.m. New York, August 7. It is authoritatively learned that Mr. Lloyd George and the Dominion Prime Ministers are vexed over the United Stares’ refusal to consider an tinder-" standing between Britain, Japan and America to take the place of the Japanese alliance. Britain suggested* a conference of the three Powers as a preliminary to the Washington meeting, in order to reach such an understand»ng, but Mr. C. E. Hughes (Secretary of State) and President Harding, remembering the fate of the Versailles treaty and the Franco-American defence agreement, in the Senate vetoed the suggestion, feeling certain that Congress would not accept. It is now regarded as certain, however, that the proposal will be broached when the Washington Conference assembles on November 11.—Aus.Cable Assn.
