Insurance against pillage has busied the minds of ship-owners and shippers for a long time, and many times tne question has been discussed in the Law Courts. Mr. Blair, counsel for a defendant shipping company in <i rase In the Supreme Court to-day. said one of the chief difficulties which arose . was that merchants and others were very unwilling to specify packages as of special value, but. should those packages be pillaged they were very willing to claim special damages. Unless packages were specified of special value the companies admitted liability to the extent of £l6 a cubic foot, and the maximum was £2OO a package in the event of pillage. If a merchant wished higher insurance, he should be agreeable to pay a higher freight.
