Hughes (Sear.Hu: f of State) petitioning for the abrogati a of the "gentlemen’r agreement* with J pan, and declaring that no seli-reapect-ing world Power hould have made such a pact. A letter signed by Calitomian Senators and Congressmen accompented the brief, generally approving of its contents, and inviting serious conakteration by Mr. Hughes. The brief states: “To-day the ifftelligent white business, professional and laboring elements, which until a few montus ago derided warnings of a ■tepaae.se peril, are openly, secretly, directly and through commissions, pet.ftinwfng for protection.” The brief addst “A’ treaty of settlement with Japan would be a violation and invasion of the State’s rights.”—Aus.-NJZ.
