PUNGAREHU. (Trom Our Own Correspondent.) The weather here lias been very squally, wifh hail-storms, accompanied by thunder and lightning, unpleasant for both man and beast. Cows are coming into profit, and the bleat- 1 Log of young calves makes a doleful accompaniment to the hail-stones, A meeting of rate-payers will be held in the local hall on Monday, the Bth, when further discussion on matters of interest te county affairs will take place, and no doubt there will be a large attendance on that evening. ■Coastal residents, and more especially Raliotu, Pungarehu, and Warea, will regret to hear of the anticipated early departure from this district of Mr. and Mrs. Cameron. For the past three and a half years Mr. Cameron Ims held the position of assistant keeper of the Cape Egmont lighthouse, and has received notice of his transfer to Centre Island, where he will assist Mr. P. Grenfell, who some six or eight months ago was sent there from Cape Egmont. Mr. Cameron has ungrudgingly devoted the greater part of his spare time to furthering the Interests of Pungarehu, holding the office of secretary of the School Committee and also of the hall, and during his term of office he did excellent work. He was also secretary for the Patriotic Committee during the last year or so of the war, and his cheerful manner and willing help was much appreciated by his coworkers. Mrs. Cameron has. been an active member of the ladies’ committee for the hall improvement, since its inception, and much of th© success of the various functions held to raise the necessary money was due to her help and efforts. Mr. and Mrs. Cameron will carry with tluun tlie best wishes of a wide circle of friends. The Editor of the News also acknowledged with gratitude the splendid work Mr. Cameron did-for the paper as well as the district in the capacity of correspondent, and joins in the good wishes expressed for his future. The meeting called by the secretary of tte Ladies’ Committee for Saturday, July 30, received a setback, which, to say the least, was disappointing, especially when the matter to be discussed was the "Memorial to our Fallen Soldiers." However, the committee are determined to carry on, and the balance of £3 ss, which is held by the secretary, as result of tte complimentary social at Parihaka soldier settlers, will be used as a nucleus of a fund for the memorial. A further effort will shortly be made to increase tj.ie amount, and it is also hoped that contributions will be received from those most interested, so that a fitting memorial may be erected to those who so nobly gave their lives for home and loved ones from this district.
