PROSPECT OF FIRMING IN OAT VALUES. Christchurch, August 2. Oats remain stagnant as far as business is concerned, but there are no weak holders, and consequently there is no easing in values. So few oats are coming forward that there is a belief in some quarters thaT when northern over-sellers come on the market later in the month they will tave difficulty in filling requirements. With the prospect of a firming up in values, farmers are content to await some such development, judging by the paucity of their offers. Rye grasses and cocksfoot continue firm, there being a stronger tone throughout. Considerable business with the North Island nns been done in cocksfoot on the basis of 9%d * for (machine-dressed, equal to 7d or 7%d for farmers. , AUCKLAND SHAREMARKET. Auckland, Last Night. Sales on tie Stock Exchange to-day were: War Loan, 193 J, £B7 10s, 1938 £B3 10s; Inscribed Stock, 1927, £9l; New Zealand Insurance, 29s 6d; South British Insurance, 34s 6d; Northern Steam (contributing), 5a lOd. NEWTON KING LTD., REPORTS. At Urftnui on July 25, a full yarding of all classes was submitted to a slackened demand. This was particularly noticeable in the store section, whilst in the dairy pens anything with quality especially good conditioned cattle close up found ready buyers. The dairy sale was on the whole a ver.y satisfactory one. Wethers ils Id, forward do 14s 9d, lambs 6s, inferior do 3s 4d, store cows 26s to 31s, fat do £7, yearling steers 18s to 325, 20-month do £2 ss, yearling heifers 18s to 30s, better grown do £2 7s to £3 3s, springing heifers £lO to £l2 10s, backward sorts £6 to £7 15s, springing cows £lO to £l5, cows in profit £l2 to £l5, poorer quality do £7. At Stratford on 26tb a very good yarding met with bright enquiry throughout. Prices remained quite on a par with recem improved rates, practically the whole offering finding ready buyers. Steep were not so keenly sought, after although satisfying sales were made. Forward wethers 16s, fat ewes 13s 7d, lambs 10s to 12s sd, store cows 20s to £2 3s. fresh conditioned £3 to £4, fat do £5 Gs to £6 15s, fat bullocks £8 15s, yearling, steers 24s to 355, yearling heifers 35s to £3 7s 6d, Jersey do £5 Ils to £6 18s. empty heifers £4 17s to £6 17s, in-calf heifers £5 2s 6d.

Stratford dnirv sale, a very heavy yarding was submitted and bright business continued throughout. The offering contained a fair number of backward calving cattle and for these bidding was inclined to drag, but otherwise everything sold readily and well. Springing heifers ~8 10s to £9 10s, more forward do £lO 10s to £l3, heifers calved £8 to £l4 10s, dairy cows £7 10s to £9 10s, better sorts £lO to £l3, quality do £l5 f o £l9 10s. choice do £22 to £3O. At Ingiewrod on 27th the yarding was full in each section, although enquiry was of a dragging nature for both sheep and store cattle, pt ices on the whole kept up well and a most satisfactory clearance was eventually made. Dairy cattle sold very much better compared with last sale practically the whole of a large yarding changing hands. Lambs 6s to 7s, forward do 12s, in-lamb ewes 6s 3d to 7s 6d. better sorts 9s Id to 10s, yearling steers 15s to 31s, 2-year do £2 15s, fat bullocks £lO 10s to £l2, store cows 17s 6d to £2, fresh conditioned do £2 12s 6d to £4 10s, fat do £7 16s, yearling teifers 20s to £2, better quality do £2 6s to £4 3s, empty heifers £4 2s 6d to £5 10s, in-calf heifers £6 10s to £6 15s, springing heifers £9 to £l2, Jersey do £l9 to £2O, springing cows aged and backward £6 to £8 10s, medium quality do £ll to £l4, quality do £l5 10s to £2O, pedigree Jersey cow 25 guineas, pedigree Jersey heifers 31 and 40 gns. At Rahotu a full yarding came forward and we report a satisfactory clearance at the hammer. Yearling heifers comprised the. bulk of the entry of store cattle and the lately advanced rates for this class were fully maintained. The bulk of a large offering of dairy stock chiefly of medium quality sold well. Store pigs 35s to £2 ss, yearling heifers 29s to £2 ss, well-grown do £3 9s to £4 7s 6d, Jersey do £4 15s to £5 4s, empty heifers £5 15s, in-calf heifers £5 10s to £7 10s, store cows 20s to £2 2s 6d, fat cows £8 15s, 2-year steers £2 10s to £2 19s, cows in calf £5, springing heifers £9 15s to £lO 15s, springing cows £8 10s to £l3 10s, quality do £l9 10s to £25. We have conducted the following clearing sale and report as follows: — At Bitham on 25th, on account of Mr. J. Burke, buyers attended In strong force and a brisk sale resulted, the herd of 45 cows through which there was a fair amount of age making the high average of £2O. Hprses and pigs also sold particularly well. At Oaonul on 26inst., on account of Mr. Ruho Rangitaawa, buyers attended in large numbers and everything was cleared at most satisfactory' prices. The principal quotations are: Springing cows up to £2O, cows calved to £22 10s, yearling heifers £6 Ils. draught gelding £2B, draught mares £35 10s, £37 10s, store pigs 245, sows £2 15s.

At Waitara on the following day on account of Mrs. Hodson, we report a most successful sale, horses and implements realising excel•» lent prices, whilst the herd of 23 cows which were In pfnk of condition averaged £l9, draught mares made £2B to £29 10s, filly £l9, sows in farrow £4 12s 6d to £5 10s, store pigs 30s, slips 15s. At Pukearuhe on July 28, we conductua u complete dispersal on account of Mr. A. Sorrenson, and report a steady and successful sale throughout. Buyers for the cows, which were in splendid condition, were in attendance from all parts of the coast, and also from South Taranaki, resulting in the higl ly satisfactory average nf £l6. being obtained for the herd of 80. The yearling heifers which were very well grown and showed nice quality made from £6 9s to £8 Is. Horses, implements, and furniture also made good values.
