Mr. R. F. Baird, of New Plymouth, who has been appointed District Land Registrar at Gisborne, leaves for Gisborne by this morning’s mail. The death occurred at Petqne on Sunday of Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson, relict of the late Mr. S. R Johnson, and youngest daughter of the late Mr. William lliddler, who was one of the earliest triers in the Valley. Born in Petone n 1851, the late Mrs. Johnson had reded in Petone up till the time of her loath, and had been closely associated ■iih local affaire for many years.
The death occurred at VVestown, New Plymouth, yesterday of Mr. John. ( R. under, one of the early settlers. The late Mr. Lander, who was a Waireka veteran, served all through the Maori wars. He took up farming on. the Frankley Road, recently retiring and removing to Westown. He leaves a widow and grown-up family. Mr. Lander, who was 86 years of. age, was born in Great Torington (Devonshire). England, and came out to New Zealand with his parents in the ship Oriental in 1841. He married a daughter of Mr. Baldwin, of Barrett Road, also a pioneer settler.
