COUNCIL OF EMPIRE.
CONFERENCE ENDING. RETURN OF MR. MASSEY. WIRELESS PROPOSALS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, Augiwt I. The Imperial Conference nominally concludes on Tuesday. General Smuts, the Maharajah of Cutch, ano. other members of these delegations are arranging to depart immediately. Messrs. Hughes and Maseey cannot connect with steamers earlier than the 24th. The interval will be occupied with minor matters of especial interest to Australasia. Mr Hughes adheres to his decision to journey by way of Suez, probably joining the steamer at a Mediterranean port after the Amiens ceremonies, and settling commercial matters as France requested The continued sittings will enable him to face many problems still untouched. To-day the Conference discussed the committees’ reports on wireless and air communications After a long debate neither matter was decided- Postal opinion etrongly favors th© committee’s scheme, ana the majority of the members of the conference suggest its adoption. Mr. Hughes, who opposed the 2000 miles’ radius plan at every stage, is now continuing hia opposition, and contending that this idea was acceptable years ago, but nothing ahort of direct communication conformed, to modern opinion. If the scheme was to be exploited let it be something unlikely to become out of date quickly. Direct communication between Britain and the Dominions was essential. In view of this the probability is that no decision will be reached, pending further information.
