NEW PLYMOUTH COUNCIL. ’ 'APPLICATIONS FOR STREET WORKS. I ;; The New Plymouth Borough Council met ; last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. I E. ‘.Wilson), Crs. J. Kibby, V. Griffiths, E. iDingie, T. N. Blackball, R. L. Parkin, W. ‘Rumball, J. Brown and P.. A. Large. ■ Writing in connection with a sub(division at Fitzroy, Mr. E. W. Lysoas sug gested that it would be in the public interest to open a road from Record Street to Fitzroy Road, as a coniinuatiori of Barriball Street. Reporting on this, the engineer (Mr. W. H. Cook) said,■'he had previously recommended that a road be provided to eventually connect Barrib-all ’Street. The council decided against undertaking tbe formation of the road. 1 Au application was received from Mr. N. i Allen, Westown, asking that the road in j front of his shop be ■ improved to give •residents access to the/ verandah.—The engineer was inptructpd to attend to this request. Regarding the opening up of Smith Road, Mr. Cook wrote recommending that the work be held over for a short time, in view of the unfavorable weather. He suggested that if the path had the edge taken off and a light gravelling put on it would see the next two or three months over. —On the motion of Crs. Griffiths and Parkin it was decided that the engineer’s recommendations be given effect to. It was decided to inform residents of Devon Street West that the council could not undertake streets improvements as asked for some time ago, and that they be recommended to go in for a special loan. Webster Bros, wrote stating that as they had some ventilators to complete along thd 30ft. entrance way bordering on James’ Lane, they desired that at least i the 30 feet of the lane next to Devon / Street be completed permanently, and offered to donate £5 towards the cost. The engineer submitted an estimate of £l9 4s I for regrading, levelling and asphalting, and | i it was decided that tbe work be done on ! the conditions offered. ; A letter was received from Mr. T. H. {Bate?, asking the council to define the perI manent levels on the boundary of property J abutting St. Aubyn and Queen Streets, as 'it was desired to proceed with the buildling of the new Taranaki Club house.—lt | was decided to reply that the council had ■no intention at present of removing the bank adjoining the property. The question of effecting maintenance repairs to Rawhiti Street was referred to the engineer, MISCELLANEOUS. I Applications were received from the East i End, Rotokare, Kawaroa Park, Ngamotu 'Domain, Frankleigh Park and Pukekura Park Committees for trees from the council’s stock as recently offered to reserves ■ bodies.—Crs. Parkin and Brown were appointed a sub committee to deal with the allocation of the iirees. The progress report from the consulting engineers on the hydro-electric workstated that the driving of No. 1 tunnel was : proceeding from the reservoir end and the j heading had been driven within S 4 feet of • the river. The electric locomotive for conj tract No. 3 was now on the ground. | Four applications were received from em- ! ployees of the council for houses which are j now being erected, and it was decided to I defer allocation pending others being given an opportunity of applying. A report detailing renovations, repainting, etc., required at the abattoirs and abattoir cottage was received by the , council, the total cost, of the proposed works being estimated at £775. An esti- ' mate of £124 was also brought down for repairing the roadway. The question was ' referred to the finance committee for a ( recommendation.
