PERSONAL.

Mr. J. E. Wilson, who has resigned the position of Chief Judge of Samoa, is expected to return to New Zealand in October.

It is understood that Mr. Justice Herdman w’ill shortly leave Christchurch and take up the southern circuit of the Auckland Supreme Court. A London message states that Sir Eric Geddes has joined the directorate of Lever Bros, at a salary of £lO,OOO a year, and will shortly abandon politics.

Constable Fleming, of the Wellington wharf police, who has been transferred to Hawera, and Constable Palmer, of Wellington central, transferred to New Plymouth, arrived in New Plymouth last night to report for duty. What must be pretty well a record of public service for New Zealand was recognised at Invercargill, when there was a large gathering to do honor to Mr. John Stead, who was defeated at the recent Mayoral election after 32 years’ continuous service on the Town Council (states an exchange). During that lengthy term Mr. Stead was Mayor for four terms, two of them during the war years, in the course of which he never once failed to speed the departing soldiers or to welcome those who returned. Many eulogistic references to •Mr. Stead’s services were made at the gathering, and he was handed a framed photograph of the former Council, a signet ring, and a cheque.
