The sentence on thirty-one members of the Poplar Council is unique in municipal history- The councillors marched in procession to the Law Courts, headed by brass hands. Mr. Lansbury and others stated their ewe, declaring that while they were notseeking cheap martyrdom, they desired to protect the poor. They pointed out that there were over ten thousand un** employed men and women in Poplar, and the men scrambled tor work at the docks like dogs after bones, while the children searched, the durtbins for crusts. The rates on a £34 a year house, already equalled the rent.
