The attendance was large and the wicket fast. .Vnnstrong, ■ McDonald, Carter, aud Taylor stood out. The) match is being played in the public park. The outfield roughish, but good in the circum- i stances. Earlier in tho tour Essex lost by an in- ■ nings. On this occasion the side was strength- i ened by tho inclusion of Russell ana Ash- i ton brothers, but Douglas and Freeman are not playing. Hubert Ashton, the Cambridge player, was the first to /register a century against the visitors. Tho Essex, team is : Russell, Dixon, Morris, H, Ashton, Perrin, Fane, C. Ashton, Gilligan, Franklin, H. Smith, Louden. Perrin won the toss and sent in Russell j and Dixon, facing Gregory and Hendry. Tho ; last named accepted a return from Russel) with 3 on tho board. The wicket was inclined to be fiery, and the wickets fell fast, the score at lunch being five for 49. On the resumption after lunch Gilligan and Perrin added 30 in twenty minutes in entertaining fashion, though the former escaped , an easy chance of stumping early in tis in- j nings. Both batsmen were hit by Gregory, I Perrin receiving a blow below the heart ne- j ccssltating his retirement. Ho displayed unark- j cd ability to handle Gregory's bowling, but ’ Gilligan was uncertain. The latter hit four i boundaries before Gregory ultimately found ! his stumps, Perrin was able to resume his I innings and remained not out. Tho Essex innings lasted 2V, hours. Bardsley and, Collins opened for Australia.] both scoring freely from Louden and Dixon. > Collins lifted Smith for 6, reaching his 50 in , an hour. The century was posted immediately’ afterwards, and Bardsley tiien succumbed in Franklin’s first over. He had eight fours in his total. Macartney had only just ! reached double figures when he was sent i i back by Dixon. Collins and Andrews were j ; missed during, their partnership, the latter I particularly by Hubert Ashton at second slip. When stumps were drawn Australia had lost two wickets for 192.
