DOMINION CONFERENCE. LAND SETTLEMENT QUESTIONS. By Telegraph —Press. Association. Wellington, July 26. The Dominion Conference of the Farmers’ Union opened to-day. Mr. Leadley, president, delivered an address and received a vpte of thanks by acclamation. There are about 200 remits on the order paper. It was resolved that occupiers of all Crown lands should be granted the option of buying the same. Further resolutions carried were:— That the Government be urged to legislate to provide better facilities for holders of native leaseholds purchasing the freehold of their holdings; that the granting of the freehold of national endowment lands be made retrospective, so that present occupiers shall have the right to obtain the same: that all third class Crown lands be thrown open for selection under the homestead system; that the Government be asked to resubmit all acquired lands which have been vacant for 12 months or more ou such terms as will ensure their immediate occupation. Wellington, Last Night. At the Fanners’ Union additional remits carried were:—That practical men conversant with local conditions should ; act in conjunction with the Land PurI chase Boards; that prov incial executives ■ be asked to recommend such appointments; that all land required for soldier settlement be thrown open for selection ; at such time as to allow settlers to benefit by the coming season; that the Government be urged to provide the necessary legislation giving power to the 1 Lands Minister to agree to accept the . surrender of a Crown lease, particularly when large areas of land are held, upon such terms and conditions as the Minister may agree to, particularly to have power for a tenant to retain a porton of the land under a fresh lease, upon such terms and conditions agreed to, with or without compensation for any or all of a tenant's improvements.
