LAWN TENNIS.

THE DAVIS CUP. AUSTRALIA v. CANADA. By Telegraph.—Press Assn—Copyright. Ottawa, July 23. In the Davis Cup match, Hawkes (Australia) beat Bennett (Canada) S—B, 6—4. New York, July 23. Anderson defeated La Frambers, 4—G, 7—5, 6—o, 6—l.

AN EXCITING FINISH.

Ottawa, July 23. The Hawkes—Bennett match at Toronto was most sensational. Bennett's work was most effective, but Hawkes’ returns, which were most powerful, overpowered him. Bennett, knowing Hawkes’ propensities, smashed the high ones. The match was a close and tense struggle from beginning till the last ball. The Anderson—La Frambers match offered spectacular features only in the first set. Anderson broke through La Fraunbers' ironclad defence during the second set with a fine display of cut strokes. La Frambers after that was at Anderson's mercy, the latter baffling tte Canadian with every variety of stroke. A Toronto message states that Milne broke two bones in his right hand in a practice match and it is believed he is out of the series.

Peach has announced that he will not participate in the Davis Cup games against Canada. No reason is given.
