PRESERVING AMATEUR STATUS. By Telegraph.—-Press Assn.—Copyright. London, July 22. The committee of the Amateur Rowing Association, in conference with representatives of the universities, Henley Regatta, and provincial rowers, passed a resolution declaring that organised athletic competitions, like Olympiads, entailing vast expenditure, are entirely contrary to the true spirit of amateur sport and rill endanger instead of fostering friendly relations with (international contestants, owing to the exaggerated importance attached to victories therein. The conference decided no: to support the British Olympic Association, offering instead itself to arrange occasional friendly contests, open to British and foreign amateurs. The conference also refused to alter the present definition of an amateur, — Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
