JACK DEMPSEY CHALLENGED. BY "BILLY” SHADE. FOR PURSE OF £lO,OOO ASIDE. The Sydney Referee which is just to hand contains the following interesting information : “Yesterday (June 28th) Mr. John Wren cabled Tex Rickard at New York as follows: ‘Will back “Billy” Shade to light the winner of the Dempsey-Carpentier contest for 50,000 dollars (£10,000) aside.’ “The cablegram says nothing about the match taking place in England, America or Australia. It is, therefore, left to the challenged boxer to name the locality and the .country."

This information is Interesting in view of tl e result of the big contest; and also in view of the fart that a. generous offer from Mr. John Wren was turned down by CarperY-

tier some time before the big contest. ■ Billy” Shade is an American, who came to Australia with the idea of getting matches. He got several, and all of Australia’s best, including “Hubu" Hinton, “Tonwy” Uren, “Jimmy” Clabby and “Al” Lloyd went down

before his mighty punch. There was nothing left in Australia for him lo beat, so he. decided to go back to -iiimrica, but the fates were against him. and instead of going koine, he went to hospital lor an operation ro his nose, and he is now convalescing. Shade is only a lad of about 20, and wpighs about. 12. G. He is well made and is certainly going far in the ring. His brother. Dave, is eham/pion lightweight of Canada, while another brother is also well known in boxing circles. “Billy” Shade knfiws Dempsey pretty well. He sparred with him in his (Shade's) early boxing days. In regard to the big contest, Stade expressed the opinion that. Dempsey would punch his way to victory inside of six rounds.
