SUPPORTED BY THE MINISTEB. REPLY TO MR. S. G, SMITH, U.P. Br Talaffrabh.-—Press Association, Wellington, Last Night. Addressing a deputation from the Wellington ..Schoo] Committees’ Association to-day the Minister of Education said he valued expressions or opinion from committees, which were directly ' representative of the parents ard chib [ dren, took an active interest in the work and gave practical advice. Some boards seemed to resent his coming into touch with committees, hut committees were statutory bodies and he would continue to assist them. He had always appreciated the work of committees and never had he favored their abolition. He was rather surprised to read a statement by Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., chairman of the Taranaki Association, that tne comxmt>tee had better beware or the Minister would abolish them. Either Mr. Smith had been misinformed or he had been misreported. Mr. A. J. White said that Mr. Smifib had been misreported. Mr. Smith sai4 he would not be a party to any change volvmg the abolition of committees oj the curtailment of their powers; his intention would be rather to increase theii duties and responsibilities.
