ARCHDEACON EVANS.
5 The announcement that Archdeacon Evans ’ was resigning from the position of Arch- ■ deacon of Taranaki has naturally affected the people of the province very greatly. 1 It is many years since this greatly ’ esteemed and revered clergyman came to 1 New Plymouth, and during all this time ' he has worked not only with devotion to the spiritual needs of the people, but as a > sincere friend to the whole community, irrespective of the Church to which the}' ponged. His unbounded sympathy, especially in times of trouble, has soothed many a grieving heart and broken spirit; his invariable courtesy and kindness have endeared him to all with whom he came in contact, but, above all, his spiritual ministrations and unswerving exhibitions of true Christianity have so established him i in the hearts of the people that there -is a widespread hope throughout the archdeaconry that he may yet be prevailed upon not to sunder the ties which have grown up through the years that have passed since he came to Taranaki. He has 'had a strenuous time in carrying out his high mission, but, although of late years his services have been gratuitous, he has never grudged responding to the many calls made upon him; rather he has trenched upon his reserve of strength in order to cheerfully answer those calls. The result is that the Venerable Archdeacon has come to be regarded as an important factor in the life of Taranaki, hence the ardent desire to still further benefit, by his ministrations and oversight in Church matters, as wtll as his unfailing help in every other path of life. In face of such a strong call it is very gratifying to know that the Archdeacon has been prevailed upon to withdraw his resignation if the Bishop of the Diocese will consent, and as it is confidently expected that the Bishop will be only too pleased to takq this course, the official announcement to that effect j
give the greatest satisfaction. By this further act of devotion to the district Archdeacon Evans will add to the many good services, and worthily deserve the gratitude of the citizens, and especially of the Anglican community.
