STRATFORD COUNTY.
PAST MONTH’S WORK. MEETING OF THE COUNCIL, The monthly meeting of the Stratford County Council was held on Saturday, all members being present except Cr. Jacobson, who forwarded an apology for absence. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer (Mr. W. J. Spenc-e) reported: North Riding (East). —The greater part of the month has been taken up in repairing the Ackland, and Stanley Roads. The metal on the concrete bridge at. Te Popo had to be made up, abou,t four yards of shellrook being used in this work. Twx» . days have been spent on the Cross-.Croydon and Salisbury Roads. North Riding. (W-6st).-r-One hundred and twenty yards, of boulders have been crushed and distributed -on the Lower Pembroke Road. Pit metal obtained from the side of the Cardiff Road has been used for patching • the Upper Pembroke Road. Patching -and water-tabling work has been carried out on the Radnor and Mountain Roads. South Riding.—The tunnel on the Finnerty Road has again given trouble. Some repair work , has been done on the Victoria Road. The grader has been used on thia road, to remove grass edges which have been gradually- encroaching on the metalled portion. The water, being confined, has in parts caused considerable scour. The Warwick and Mountain Roads have- also received .. .
•East Riding (Toko). —Owing to the weak state of the Ohura Road from the Kahouri .Bridge towards Toko, fairly heavy repairs have been necessary. Repairs have also been carried out on the Beaconsfield, Toko and Standish Roads.
East Riding (Douglas).—During the month the Ohura, Ohura—Mangaehu and Gordon Roads have hcen heavily patched. Water-tabling has been carried out on the Mangaotuku Road.
East Riding (Huiroa).—Oeneral surface work in the way of patching, water--tabling and culvert repairs has been done on the Makuri, Mohakau, Akama and Douglas North Roads.
West Riding.—’About 300 yards of sand and shingle have been taken out of the Kapuni Stream at the Palmer Road, and all the available sand and shingle from the iWaingongoro Stream, near Cardiff. The Waiiigongoro, Opunake No. 1, Brecon, Brooks and Hastings Roads have been patched. Water-tabling on the Opunake No. 3 and Manaia Roads has been done.
Manga ehu Riding.—’General repair work has been carried out on the Mangaotuku, Mangaehu and Mangaehu South Roads. The slips on the Manga Road do considerable damage through filling the water tables. A wash-out occurred on the Puniwhakau Road near Mr. Worthington’s, caused by the falling in of an old wooden culvert. GENERAL.
In dealing with certain portions of the hangers report where attention has been drawn to the way in which certain count}- roads are used for grazing stock, the ranger was instructed to prosecute any persons deliberately using the roads in this manner.
Application was made by Mr. A. Boyd, of Huinga, for guarantee by the council, in compliance with Post and Telegraph Regulations for telephone in the Huinga district. The petition was signed by H. Clark, A. Boyd, J. E. Jamieson, T. V. Matinsell, E. Baker, S. Pope, H. Cook, F. W. Towes, W. Rose, W. Maule, and T. H. Gooch, jnr.—lt was decided that the necessary guarantee be given by the council. A letter from the Progress League was held over till next meeting. Mr. M. G. Trotter’s application for donation of small storm water drain on the Ohura' Road was left in the hands of the engineer.
Mr. A. R. Claridge made application for permhsion to Obtain a small quantity of clly from the Ohura Road and some shellj rock for concreting cowshed. —Left in the hands of the engineer. Mr. G. Cail’s application to fence a portion of the Puuiwhakau Road was left to the chairman and the riding member to deal with.
Mr. A. Richmond’s application for permission to take, a further quantity of shingle was refused, Mr. Richmond is to be notified that the royalty on metal already taken must be paid and an apology forwarded to the council for trespassing and removing shiflgle from county property. Failing this, proceedings will be taken. Mr. B. Fryday’s application for permission to generate electric power for milking machine and lighting his house was granted. The inspector has been instructed to immediately take proceedings against all ear owners who have been previously warned and who have not had j their ears correctly registered. It ba«> been decided to erect notice boards on roads near schools in the East and West Ridings. In respect to other ridings, the matter was deferred until next meeting. F. Rogers’ application to fence and use part of Toeker Street, Hniroa township. was granted during the plear.ur.e of the council on, rhe usual conditions.
