SATURDAY’S GAME. OUTSIDE OPINION. Says the Manaw&tu Timas editorially:— Great interest was centred throughout the Dominion in the football match between tho Springboks and Taranaki, which was played on Saturday last. Although the visitors were meeting one of the strongest provincial combinations in the Dominion, they had the advantage of having gained their land-lcgg nrd profited by the experience of New Zealand methods gained in Wanganui. The description of the game at New Plymouth, which ended In a draw, indicates that the visitors, besides being possessed of weight, have also staying power, and it was bad luck alone that prevented them from scoring. The Springboks would appear to have every prospect of defeating the Wairarapa team this week, but when they reach Wellington they will have a more stubborn contest. The first test match should be a treat to witness. The All Blacks have something formidable to teat, and they will require to exercise all their skill and ingenuity to avert defeat. The Springboks are the most hefty players who hate ever visited this country, and they have a perfect understanding of the fine points of the game. Taranaki put up a great performance In securing a draw with the visitors.
Towards the close of the Petono-Athletic football match at Athletic Park, Wellington, on Saturday afternoon, it was noticed that the Union Jack on the grandstand was flying at half-mast. On inquiry as to the reason, spectators at the park were advised that it had been lowered by some supporters o! the Athletic team, to indicate the defeat of Petone, who have been leading In the senior grade football competition for some time.
