Wellington, July 16. The weather was flna for the concluding d;<y of the Wellington meeting, but the going was heavy. The chief event was the Wellington Steeplechase, in which Coalition put up the great performance of winning decisively with 12.11 in the saddle. He has now won the National, the Northern, the Wellington and the Wanganui Steeplechases, and his owner, in a speech in the Press room, expressed the opinion that he is the best steeplechaser New Zealand has seen. Racing began With the Talavera Hurdles Sweet Tipperary and Ruddy .were first across the initial fence, and they passed the stand together several lengths in front of Demagogue, with Te Oro and Kipling next. Entering the back seretch Sweet Tipperary and Ruddy still held a. gcod lead, but the favorite appeared to be going well. Five furlongs from home Ruddy went on ahead of Sweet Tipperary, and he turned for home just ahead cf Te Oro, wl.o was coming fast. Te Oro took the final obstacle first, just ahead of Ruddy, who was tiring. Sir Agnes was finishing well, but just when Te Oro looked to have the race won Dick came with a late run and won by a length and a half from Te Oro. Three lengths back was Sir Agnes, and the next to finish were Ruddy ahd Demagogue. In the Liverpool Handicap Dainty Step, Mustard Pot. Callaghan and Weidono were among the early leaders, but when tre field ilwept on the course proper half a dozen had chances. At the bottom, of the straight Weldone was in front and Birkie was showing up. At the distance Mustard Pot was with Weldone, and the pair, coming away, had the finish to themselves. Ridden right out Mustard Pot won by a length. Dainty Step was third three lengths back, just ahead of Probate, and tha next to finish were Callaghan and General Advance.

There were no scratchings in the Second Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase. Pokanekane ran off at the first fence and Yankee Jack, John Bunny, and Golden Glade were the first across the obstacle. Yankee Jack and John Bunny led down the back, but John Bunry ran off at the fence near the five furlongs ;»ost. At the next fence Sartoline fell. Passing the stand Yankee Jack, Silent Dick and Maiincourt had charge. Five furlongs from home Silent Dick left Yankee. Jack and went on alone. Silent Dick won easily by eight lengths from Maiincourt, who cut Y’ankce Jack nut ih the straight. Yankee Jack was five lengths further back. Pokanekane finished the course, and as he jumped only the last fence, was first past the post. The judge hoisted him as the winning number, but subsequently this was taken down and Silent Dick was announced as the winner.

/.pprentice riders were up in the Crofton Handicap. The early leader was Rebuff, with Sir Wai in close attendance. Half a mile from home Cantoris went round the field and took charge. He led into the straight with several lengths advantage, but was being hunted along, and in the final run Ve was decisively beaten by Hallowvonia, who won by a good length. Lady Lucullus was another two lengths away third, and Sir Wai was fourth.

The Wellington Steeplechase was a great race. The withdrawals were Locheila, Multive, Luperino, Kohinahina, and Chummy. At the start Oakielgh took tire lead and cleared the front fence in advance of Luke and Sturdee. He had an eight lengths' lead as tbe straight was approached, and was jumping cleverly. Crossing the stand double Oakleigh was in front, and then came Sturdee, Luke, Paddington Green, First Line, Mattock, Coalition, Omahu and Master Strowan. Master Strowan ran off at the fence just after turning out of the straight. Entering the back stretch for tbe second time Sturdee had e good lead, and he piloted the field all the way round to the stand, taking the double .the second time. Sturdee was in the lead t>om Oakleigh, Luke, Omahu and Coalition, with Paddington Green last. Just after clearing the fence at the exit -from the straight. Sturdee slipped and fell on the flat. Omahu went to the lead shortly after this, but at the fence six furlongs from home Coalition took charge. Luke, Omahu and Mattock were nearest to the winner on the top bend, but a bad jump sent Mattock back. He came again, but only just struggled over the next obstacle. Coalition was still howling along wait in the lead. He took the final fence well, with Luke coming at him. but in the run home Luke could not get to him, and the Wellington-owned gelding won by fire lengths. First Dine was twelve lengths away third. Mattock was fourth and Oakleigh fifth. Paddington Green fell two fences from home. The winner and his rider got a great ovation on returning for weighing-in. In the Winter Oats Verbosity was first to show out, with Admiral Codrington, Kareao and Slyvan handy. After the field had gone three furlongs (Counter Stroke was in charge, v.itlr Verbosity. Salute all well up. Strategy made a forward move, but was sent hack at the home lain. Battle Knight came List on the outer and Arcft Salute got through on the rails below the distance. KnreflO. It is understood that the Racing Conference has granted the Taranaki Jockey Club the usual dates for its Christmas meeting, and February 9 and 11 fcr its autumn meeting. The proposals that trainers, and jockeys be licensed by a committee of tbe Racing Conference instead of by jockey clubs as in the past bus also been approved, us well as the proposal that racecourse detectives be appointed by the conference.
