PLANS FOR NEXT SESSION.
OPENING ABOUT SEPTEMBER-22. MAY LAST OVER CHRISTMAS. According to a cablegram from Lon-: • don, Mr. Massey intends to be back in ■ New Zealand by October 7. This was : about the latest date that he eontem- i plated when he left the Dominion for • London, and it is evident that the pro- } longation of the business of the Imperial • Conference Is rather Interfering with his ; plans. Mr. Massey will require to leave j j London about five weeks hence if he is . ; to reach Wellington by the first w eek in j October. The deliberations of the conference appear to be proceeding at a leisurely pace, and it is known that Mr. Massey will be desirous of getting some free time for the other business that he has taken in hand on behalf of New Zealand, inoluding the discussion of wool and freight questions. If the Prime Minister can reach New 1 Zealand by October 7 the session of Parliament may be opened about September 22. This would allow time for the completion of formal business, including the address-in-reply debate, before Mr. Massey takes his seat, and the way would then be clear for the important legislation of the session, including the Tariff Bill. This Bill is to be circulated as early as possible after the opening of * Parliament, in order that the public may have an opportunity to discuss its terms before Parliament finally adopts the new tariff. It appears certain now that, the session cannot be completed before Christmas, and that members wall require to sit in Wellington in January, and possibly in February.
