TRADE RECIPROCITY.

NEW ZEALAND AND AUSTRALIA.

THE TARIFF BILL. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copjrrijbt. . Melbourne, July 15. In the House of Representatives the Tariff Bill passed the second reading by 26 votes to 11. Mr. Fenton's amendment was defeated by 27 to 12. Mr. Massy Greene (Minister of Customs), replying to a question, stated that a letter had been sent to New Zealand to the effect that the Commonwealth was prepared to negotiate with the Dominion on the matter of trade reciprocity. Mr. Mahoney, a private member, is drafting a Bill with the object of placing picture theatres under Government control, stating that the picture combine is making undue profits which are sent to foreign countries. Received July 15, 9.30 p.m. Melbourne, July 15. In the Senate, Mr. Gardiner, speaking against the Tariff Bill, said he calculated that the tariff would cost the people £50,000,000 yearly. The duty would not bestow any direct benefit in other directions, as the advantages of a higher duty in many industries would be eaten up in the increased cost of raw material.
