THE MORATORIUM.
FURTHER EXTENSION SUGGESTED. When discussion at yesterday’s meeting of the Provincial Executive of the Taranaki Farmers’ Union centred on a Hawke’s Bay remit to the Dominion Conference, Mr. E. Maxwell expressed himself as strongly against the adoption of any such action as was recommended by the remit.
The particular remit read as follows: “That owing to the main primary products of the Dominion being worthless, the Government be asked to extend the moratorium for such further period as it may consider necessary after December 31, 1921, more especially with respect to fixed mortgages.” Mr. Maxwell stated that there may have been sufficient cause for the Government to have brought in such legislation as they had done, but he considered any further extension of the moratorium to be greatly detrimental to the country. To extend it would be putting off the evil day. He considered that the farmers were practically asking the Government to extend the moratorium, and he did not want to see the Farmers’ Union a party to such a psUtioa.-r-Stwh ,
