BOROUGH COUNCIL. (From Our Own. Correspondent.) July 14. The Borough Council held its monthly meeting on Wednesday last. Very little business came before the meeting, and councillors were able to wend their way homeward before 8.30 p.m. Apologies were received for the absence of Crs. Blair and Rennie. On the motion of Cr. Ogle a vote of sympathy was passed to Mr. Rennie in his illness. Councillors generally hoped for his speedy recovery. The Taranaki Local Bodies Association recommended that the council reduce employees’ wages by Is per day. The.council thought the time was too early to reduce wages, and the letter was received. Messrs. Murray and Canton asked for a footpath in Domett Street.—To be attended to. The Mayor reported that the council’s motor bicycle had cost £l7 for repairs, a lot more thari was expected. He personally thought that the bicycle should be sold, as there was very little use for it now.—Left in the Mayor’s hands to dispose of. The foreman and overseer reported on the general nature of work done during the month, and the meeting closed. GENERAL. The orchestra of eight performers officiating at the R.S.A. ball have handed back their fees to the committee, who desire to heartily thank them for their kindness. Mr. and Mrs. Parry arrived, in England safely on the 9th instant, and Mr. and Mrs. Dick Gribbon are due to arrive on Saturday. Owing to the special train leaving at 11.30 a.m. on Saturday morning for the Springboks v. Taranaki football match, the local retailers have decided to close their shops at 11 a.m.
