Orders for papers may also be left- wl th them. ) Scottish society, \ ' ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Taranaki Provincial Scottish Society was heffi in Stratford last night, Mr. G. Sangster (president) being in the chair. There was a fair attendance of Scottf, including representatives from Eltham. In opening the meeting Mr. Sangster referred to the attempts made to hold an annual meeting during the last three, years. He emphasised that Scotland was loyal to the backbone, and loyalty would surely be one of the Scottish Society’s firmest planks. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The president nominated Mr. Macalister for the position of president for the ensuing year, but that gentleman declined on the ground that the president should be Scottish born, and so familiar with Scottish customs and traditions. Mr. Macalister was finally persuaded to accept the position, and was duly appointed. Other officers were: Vice-presidents, Messrs. J. W. McMillan, J. L. Campbell (Eltham), W. McDonald, G. Sangster (Toko), McL. Kennedy (Tahora), P. Thompson and M. Urquhart; treasurer, Mr. J. Petrie; secretary, Mr. P. Aitken; auditor, Mr. F. Smith; hon. legal adviser, Mr. P. Thompson; committee, the officers already elected and Messrs. G. Hall, J. F. Crawford (Eltham), J. W. Bownan (Midhirsb), D. Butcbart, T. Smith, L. Gillanders and R. McK. Morison. All the foregoing are residents of Stratford unless otherwise stated. It was resolved to amend* the rules of the society to allow of the election of an hon. chaplain, and other alterations. GENERAL. On the suggestion of Mr. Kerr a recommendation was made to the com mittee to set up a sub-committee to revise the rules. The subscription was increased to 5s for gentlemen and 2s for ladies, and in the meantime a levy of 2s 6d is to be taken from the gentlemen to meet expenses. A motion of appreciation of the visit of the Eltham Pipe Band on Saturday last and the many services the band had rendered to the society, was carried unanimously. Messrs. Sangster Kennedy. Petrie, Smith and McDonald were also thanked for bringing about the resuscitation of the society. It was decided that it would be advisable to induce as many members as possible to attend the Eltham Scottish ball to-morrow night. Mr. F. J. McDonald, who has been secretary to the society for the last ten years, was also accorded a very hearty vote of thanks. Mr. McDonald is shortly severing his connection with the society and leaving the district. HOCKEY CLUBS’ DANCE.

The combined Stratford and Egmont Hockey Clubs announce their annual ball to take place in the Stratford Town Hall on Wednesday, July 20. Mrs. Bianchi’s orchestra has been engaged, and patrons are assured of a most enjoyable entertainment. GENERAL. It was incorrectly stated yesterday that the Stratford R.S.A. would hold a fancy-dress ball on August 4. It was decided at the meeting on Tuesday night that the ball would not be a fan-cy-dress one. A hockey girls’ concert and fair is being arranged to take place in the Parish Hail, Stratford, on Tuesday next. July 19. in aid of the Sports Club of the Stratford. District High School There will be on sale many useful and pretty things, and a fine concert programme has been arranged. The cause is especially worthty of support, and the hall ought to be packed both afternoon and evening. Friends will regret to learn of the death of Mrs. Burke, relict of the late Mr. William Burke, a well-known Lowgarth settler. The late Mrs. Burke I who was 78 years of age, ..had been a sufferer from illness for some time past. She is survived by seven sons and one daughter, viz.:—Mr. Richard Burke (New Plymouth). Mr. J. Burke (Eltham). Mr. A. S. Burke (Stratford), Mr. H. Burke (Palmerston North), Mr. A, T. Burke (Lowgarth). Messrs. Robert and Norman Burke (Hawera Plains), and Mrs. J. W. J. Gardiner (whose residence at New Plymouth was recently destroyed by fire). A good farmer’s or householder’s bundle of stationery is supplied for 5s post free by Wilson Bros., stationers. Stratford.
