HARBOR BOARD.

monthly meeting. The New Plymouth Harbor Board met yesterday. Present: Messrs. N. icing (chairman), C. B. BeUringer, B. Maxwell, C. H. Burgess, C. B. McGuinness, .1. McCluggage, D. I. Hughes, J. S. Connett, and C. A. WilklnSOD ’ HABBOIt MASTER'S BBPOBT. Por the period ot five weeks endtag July 9, the harbormaster (Captain N. Wallet), stated that 24 vessels had entered the port, their aggregate tonnage being 50,400 tons. Imports were 13,876 tons and exports 3658 tons, a total ot 17,534. Tto Quantity ot government coal landed was 6260 tons. The S.S. Waltomo from Newcastle with 6260 tons ef coal for the Railway Department arrived on June 9, her draught being 22tt din forward and 23it Shi att. The Suffolk from Timaru on Juno 22, loaded 992 tons ot froaen meat and sailed on 26th for Wellington. The P, and O. company's steamer Poshawur. arrived from Wellington on June 2d, and loaded 978 tons ot produce. Her sailing draught was 20tt 9in forward and 22tt sta att. The U.S.S. Company's Waiotapu from San Brancisco on the Sth lust., landed 1400 tons ot cargo. The resident engineer (Mr. G. W. Baxter Lowson), reported as follows for the period Juno 6 to July 9, 1921: — The construction of the inclined tramway to tte new auarry st Parltutu is now well advanced and the incline should hi in operation early in August. Prior to opening up the quarry it will be advisable to Are the second blast In Parilutu. The "Thomas King" was slipped for part overhaul early to June, the completion ot the work standing over until the event of suitable tides at the end of this month. The dredge ‘Taritutu” .arrived back from Wellington on June 30. Excluding Sundays and holidays, ahe bad been on the patent slip for 15 days, and alongside the wharf at Wellington for 9 days, practically no time being lost through bad weather or any other cause. It will be seen that she occupied the slip for a longer period than usual, but the repairs necessary this year to the bull’ were unfortunately more extensive than on any previous occasion, the sheathing In the hopper being a particularly heavy item. The dredge is at present alongside the eastern bertn for the completion of her overhaul, tte work, consisting chiefly of overhauling the main engines, deck gear and winches, and repairs to the deck and chute, being in the hands of our own staff assisted by local tradesmen. The whole-time grab has also came to hand. It would seem advisable to load the “Thomas King” at tte Breakwater, and to transfer this crane to the Pnritutu quarry where It could deal more or less efficiently with the smaller-sized stone. I would recommend that its place at the Breakwater be taken by the 40 ton crane, which otherwise would lie idle, and although a small staging would have to be erected to allow the crane to clear the haulage tracks, this work would bo justified through the crane being able to span the western track, thus leaving the eastern road open for the side-top wagons to proceed along the Breakwater. The bottom alongside this small jetty could be dredged to allow coastal steamers to be alongside and discharge heavy lifts. GENERAL. On behalf of the Shaw, Savlll Company the shipping department of Newton King Ltd., wrote applying for a lease of one of the apartment of the board’s sheds at the wharf. It was decided that the request be agreed to.
