Albert John Henderson, clerk to the Poverty Bay Meat Company, pleaded guilty and was committed for sentence on a. charge of having stolen £6O from the funds of the company. HOSTILITY TO DIVORCE ACT. Wellington, July 13. At the Anglican Synod yesterday the following resolution was passed unanimously: “That this Synod views with strong disapproval the extension of the grounds of divorce made by the 1920 amendment of the Divorce Act, as being more subversive of the Christian standard of marriage than any previous legislation on the subject.” Bishop Sprott, in the course of a striking speech, said: “What amazes me on this subject is that the women of the country have not risen up, because it is the woman who suffers every time.” AUCKLAND UNEMPLOYED. Auckland, July 13. A Labor demonstration against unemployment to-day took the form of two meetings on the waterfront and a procession to the market square, where i about one thousand people assembled. The speakers included Mr. Parry, M.P., and several local Labor leaders. Subsequently a delegation interviewed the Mayor and asked him to use his efforts to secure that a portion of the five millions loan might be ear-marked for work undertaken by local bodies. The Mayor informed the Labor deputation .hat the City Council at its next meeting would earnestly endeavor to find a practical answer to the unemployed problem. He promised to forward the representation, made by the Labor demonstration to the Government. LABOR PARTY’S CONFERENCE. Wellington, July 13. The fifth annual conference of the New Zealand Labor Party opened here to-day. About 56 delegates were present. Mr. P. Fraser, M.P., president of the party, was in the chair. In the course of his address Mr. Eraser said the large number of delegates present was proof of the activity of the organisation. The greatest tribute the party could receive was the determined opposition of the enemies . of Labor. REPLY TO CONGRATULATIONS. Wellington, July 13. A reply to the congratulations sent by the Cabinet »n the anniversary of his taking office has been received from Mr. Massey. In it he states that what success he has been able to attain has been due to the great loyalty of his colleagues and the support of members of his party. j He concludes: “The present time has its difficulties and anxieties for the Dominion, in common with other countries, but the citizens of New Zealand may look forward to the future with confidence undirjinished.”
