LEVEL CROSSING ACCIDENT, By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, July 11. Richard Evans, aged 78, a well-known Kaiapoi resident, while crossing the railway line to catch a train for Christchurch, was knocked down, part of the train passing over his legs. He was taken to a Kaiapoi nursing home, and it is expected that both legs will have to be amputated. Later. Mr. Evans diea about midday. He was chairman of- the Waimakariri Harbor Board and a prominent member of the Farmers’ Union and other bodies. DEATH FROM COLLISION. Dannevirke, July 11. An inquest concerning the death of Lucy Willan, who died on June 29, as the result of injuries received in a collision with another cyclist, the evidence showed that deceased and her sister were riding without lights and the former was run into by a male cyclist, who also did not have a light. A verdict was returned that death resulted from a fracture of the base of the skull. The coroner strongly commented upon the practice of people riding bicycles and driving motor cars and vehicles after dark without lights.
