INVESTIGATING DIPHTHERIA. I Bj Telegraph. —Press Association. 1 Christchurch, July 11. The Mayor received a letter from Mr. C. J. Parr in reply to the suggestion of a recent deputation that a. commission of experts be appointed to investigate the cause of diphtheria. The Minister’s opinion was that the suggestion at- present was. not possible of fulfilment. He proposed to communicate with the Medical Research Council and the Roekfeller Foundation and ascertain whether they purposed in the near future undertaking any research into the causation of diphtheria, and offering to collaborate by supplying any information in his power. In the meantime the . Department had been instructed to give special attention to Christchurch and suburbs and to endeavor by all possible means to ascertain the cause of the present outbreak. TRAWLER IK PROHIBITED AREA. Auckland, July 11. -Captain Duff McKay, master of the City Council steam trawler, was fined £lO for trawling in a prohibited area, by Mr. Poynton, S.M.. who recommended that the vessel be released to the owners on. payment of £5O. PROHIBITED LITERATURE. Auckland, July 11. John Douglas Robertson, charged with Having sold a pamphlet on Russia, which encouraged violence, was fined £5, by Mr. Poynton. S.M., who said that although the print encouraged violence, it would not cause a revolution here, but evil must be avoided as much as possible by preventing the distribution of mental poison of this sort. Leave to appeal was granted.
