NEW PLYMOUTH COUNCIL, GENERAL PURPOSES OOMMITTEEfr The New Plymouth Borough Council met last night. Present: The Mayoif (Air F. E. Wilson) Crs. J. Kibbv, T.\\ Blackball, V. Griffiths, R L. Parkin, J< Brown, E. Dingle and R. A. Large. DORSET AVENUE. On behalf of the ratepayers and resi< dents of Dorset Avenue, Dartmoor, Mix J. O’Grady wrote requesting that tome attention be given to the Avenue. ll< contended that the present w; an op* nortune time, as the council’s working staff was now engaged in reforming ani metalling Dartmoor Avenue as far as( the top of Dorset Avenue. DEVON STREET WEST. A communication was received froinl’ Mr. J. Cock, Veale’s estate, urging that the council consider the question of forming a footpath from Mr. Gr>gga* property to Veale’s estate, Devon Streep West. The engineer reported that the wor!4 mentioned involved an expenditure of£ from £6O to £lOO Thirteen residents of Devon Streep West wrote directing attention to th® impassable condiion of the street at tha present time and asking that something.’ should be done to relieve the position. The question was deferred till next week. GENERAL. A deputation consisting of Messrs J. Smith, P. Stainton, and C. H. Stephenson, representing the Fitzroy Rate* payers’ Association waited on the council in connection with the association’s efforts to secure a porition of the Har-i bor Board’s lease at the end of Beach Street for use as a recreation reserve. The Mayor replied that the matter waft not under the jurisdiction of the council, but a sub-committee could be appointed to act in conjunction with the tion’s representatives. Crs. Kibby, P ar "' kin, and Dingle were appointed to joitt the association’s representatives as a deputation to the Harbor Board. On the recommendation of the finance committee it was decided that the previous authority for the formation and metalling of George Street (estimated cost £404) be camelled, and that in lieu thereof the borough engineer be authorised to form, metal and construct the footpaths in Smith Street, esimated cost £433 iprovided in the £57,000 loan). The borough engineer (Mr. W. H. Cook) reported that he had gone carefully into the question of raising tha wall of the Mangamahoo dam. He pointed out that the wall could not with safety be raised in what might be termed a direct manner and some other means might be devised, such as strengthening with counterfoots. Those would necessarily be costly owing to the precarious foundation. The council de* sided to inioect the dam to-morrow.
