HAWERA COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Hawera County Council wa« held on Saturday. Present: Crs. J. B. Murdoch (chairman), R. J. Linn,. £. Washer, B. C. Lysaght, A. Lareom, J. Dunlop and C. Hawken. The Bank of New Zealand wrote notifying that the rate of interest on overdraft had been increased to 7 per cent. Mr. Murdoch moved that the council protests against such a rate of interest being charged. This was seconded by Cr. Hawken and carried.
Tho following resolution was received from the Taranaki Locaß Bodies’ Conference ’. "That it be a recommendation to all local bodies to roduco wages of casuals, surfacemen, teamsters, and foremen (blacksmiths and bridge carpenters excepted) by Is per day.”—lt was decided that the recommendation bo given effect to.
The Commissioner of Crown Lands forwarded a' schedule of thirds lor tho period ending March 31, 1921. The council was asked to forward its proposals as early as possible, so that they could be considered by the Land Board.—Complied with.
A circular letter was received from tho Stratford Hospital Board seeking support to a proposal that an effort be made to effect a change from the present system of apportioning subsidies in favor of the present £ for •£.—The proposal was supported.
The resident engineer of tho Public Works Department wrote stating that slips had occurred on the 57 chains of dray road recently widened (Tongahoe • Road). As the council i was deriving rates from this section, he would be glad if the road was kept open. The department was arranging to clear slips on tbe bridle track portion, being abort three miles.
—it was decided to write to the Public Works Department stating that they must decline to spend money on the road.
The department wrote stating that no applications for grants had yet been received ■te the estimates were now being prepared, the coqncil was asked to forward applications as early as possible.—The clerk suggested that a grant be asked for Skeet Road. The chairman said he understood the Government was to wholly repair damage for which it was responsible. If they applied for a grant they would be expected to pay £ for £. They could look Into the matter and make an application if necessary. FOREMAN'S REPORT. A start luis been made crushing the metal at the back of the station, and it is being delivered from the Putikt pa towards Hawera, good progress being made while the crusher is working, but the job fans ben stopped a good bit on account of wet weather. The engine that drives tte crusher had to have new tubes, as the old ones were completely done and were giving a lot of trouble. The two bridges on the Skeet Road are now repaired and should last’for some tSme -with ordinary traffic. The Mangatoki had to be re-decked. The footpaths in Okaiawa township aro being gravelled, and another day will finish them. Noraianby-Okaiawa Road.—The metalling of, the untnrrod portion of this road is beinp proceeded with. There Is a considerable amount of stone to be broken in the gravel that is being delivered.
Tongahoe Valley Road.—The big cutting on the hill has cleared of tho slips and the overhanging papa removed.
Munga Munga bridge on the Whareroa Road is now being strengthened, in readiness to take the road roller over; there is more rotten timber in’ it than was anticipated. This will have to be replaced.—Adopted.
