Mr. L. A. Nolan leaves this morning for Wellington to attend the New Zealand Racing Conference. Colonel W. Meldrum, C. 8., C.M.G., D. 5.0., of New Plymouth, has been awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers’ Decoration.

Mr. Marshall, principal of Wanganui College, was a visitor to Hawera on Saturday.

Mr. Newton King returned from Auckland by the mail train on Saturday evening.

Sir Robert Stout has received the honorary degree of D.C.L. from Oxford University (says a cable from London). Mr. W. M. Hughes has been invited to Bath on July 23 to receive the freedom of the city (says a cable from London). It is considered likely that Mr. Hughes will pay a flying visit to Ansae when returning home, and he will join his steamer at Port Said. One of Auckland’s pioneers, Mr. James Lloyd Mandeno, died on Thursday, at the age of 87. Mr. Mandeno was the eldest son of the late Rev. J. F. Mandeno, and was born in Shropshire, England, in 1834. After serving his apprenticeship in the building trade at Bedford, he sailed- for JJew Zealand with his parents, arriving in Auckland in 1855, and took part in some of the stirring events of the Maori war. Yesterday marked the tenth year of office of Mr. \V. F. Massey as Prime Minister. On Saturday Cabinet sent congratulations of Mr. Massey. A cable from London says Mr. Massey has received many felicitations upon entering the tenth year of his Premiership. Mr. Lloyd George insisted on being photographed with Mr. Massey at Downing Street.
