OPUNAKE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) At the S.M. Court on Thursday, a few judgment summons cases and a number of noxiouei weeds cases comprised the Court proceedings. The defendants in the noxious weeds cases were natives cited by the inspector (Mr A. Cook). The fines imposed ranged from £lO to £2O, with fairly heavy Court costs. The Seaside Society will spend something like £lOOO this year on improvements to the Opunake beach. The hydro-electric works contracts have not yet been started. Very little headway will be made until the summer months.. A dairy herd sold in this district averaged £l2 per head for the milkers and old cows. This is not up to last season’s prices, 'but for this time of the year it is a good price for an average herd, and is a. good indication that prices for dairy cows will be good. This time of the year, on account of scarcity of feed, is .the bedrock’period of prices. The toll-gate question will be stoutly fought in this district, and the Warea district speaks of leaving the Egmont County if toll gates are erected. County councillors have no doubt gone into the question, and are convinced they are doing the best for the ratepayers. The Opunake Caledonian Society has been revived. Mr. C. Flaver drove his dairy herd from Opua yesterday to his recently acquired farm on Egmont Roaii. The marriage of Mr. C. Wright to Miss D. Mason was celebrated by the Rev. Father Doolaghty in the Opunake Catholic Church last Wednesday. A large gathering of parents and scholars took place in the public school on Wednesday, to bid farewell to Miss S. Hickey (head teacher). The chairman of the school committee (Mr. T. P. Hughson, junr.), presided. Appreciative reference was made to Miss Hickey’s term as teacher. Miss Hickey rose from a scholar in the school to head teacher. The school committee presented Miss Hickey with a handsome hanging lamp, and the scholars and parents handed her a first-class gramaphone. Miss Hickey suitably thanked the people for their gifts. It is reported that another ceremony will take place this week.
