ARCHDEACON EVANS.

TRIBUTE FROM THE BISHOP. The Bishop of Auckland, Dr. writes to tho Church Gazette:— I have received with great regret tIK» resignation of Archdeacon Evans, as Archdeacon ©fT’arana I .’. The work of Ihe • Archdeacon has been invaluable, and his services have always been at the disposal l . of the clergy in the arcbdeac*)niy ’vit'i* . out remuneration. fl’he kind hospital’s ity of Archdeacon and Mrs. Evans isi well-known and appreciated by myself and the clergy of the archdeaconry, anti “Tirobaiiga” has been a haven of rest? for many a weary home missioner. No doubt it will <■ <•-» as a surprise to many to know -that the magnificent ■ stipend which the archdeacon has ie-i ' ceived for his faithful ‘ rvice has lx .n r and is £2O a year, sometimes ever £l5« It is hardly to be expected that the archdeacon can make both ends meet on such a prineely income. e*pec a Ilyas his work requires constant use oi a. motor car. The diocese pays ho to its archdeacons, and the £2O grant which the archdeacons receive cotaes from the general synod out of the general church trust. This applies to all dioceses except Christchurch, where tho archdeacons are paid £75 per annum each. The work of the archdeacons, especially where they are free from parochial duties, is so valuable to the bishop and the church generally that some provision should be made for paying their ex? penses, and what is the use of £2O in these days? The archdeacons, of course, do not receive any fees for the services which they take, and have no desire to do so, but it is hardly fair to expect them to bear the heavy cost of; transport. The resignation of Archdeacon Evans will not take effect until the end of thc| jTMeat yea*.
