As a result of the heavy rains of the last few days a landslide has blocked the Stratford branch railway, about a quarter of a mile above Whangainomona. No trains were able to pass through to-day, but it is hoped to clear the line and resume traffic to-night. WORKERS’ DWELLINGS. In connection with the erection of six workers’ dwellings in Stratford, authorised during the last session of Parliament, Mr. Masters, M.P., has made inquiries from the Minister of Labor as to when the dwellings will he completed, the applicants for the houses being in the position of not knowing when they are likely to be given possession. This morning Mr. Masters received the following reply from the Hon. G. J. Anderson: “Six workers’ dwellings have been allocated to Stratford, and a contract let for the making of concrete blocks for these dwellings. Owing, however, to the financial stringency, it is regretted that the work, beyond the making of the. blocks, cannot be proceeded with at present.” The Minister stated that he expected the position "to improve in the course of a few weeks and that the work would then be gone on with. GENERAL. At a meeting of the Jersey Breeders’ Association on Saturday, Mr. F. Runford gave notice to move at the next meeting: “That it be a recommendation that the previous motion dealing with production in the Futurity Stakes be rescinded, and that there be a standard of 340 lbs of butter-fat required for qualification for entry in the - Stratford Futurity Stakes.” At the office of the N.Z. Loan and .Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., on Saturday night last, the manager, Mr. W. A. Hewitt, on behalf of the staff, presented Mr. Charles Osborn, stock agent, with a stockman’s rainproof overcoat. Mr. Osborn has been with the company over 3% years, and is leaving to join the firm of Lynskey and Evans. Mr. Hewitt wished Mr. Osborn every success in his new sphere. Mr. Osborn suitably responded.
