SMALL DECREASE IN MAIN FOOD GROUPS. The monthly abstract of statistics for June states that the index number for the three food groups as at May 15 (Dominion weighted average) is 1792, a decrease of 13 points as compared with < the preceding month’s figure (1805), j and an increase of 67.48 per cent, as ’ compared with that for July, 1914. The! decrease of 24 points in the groceries! group is attributable to a general de-d cline in the price of potatoes, rice, andsj tinned fruits, and, in some towns, sugar, ’. The dairy produce group has its index* number increased by 14 points as a re-j suit of a further rise in the price ot,. eggs. Further reductions in meat prices < in certain centres are responsible for a ] decline of 18 points in the meat index number. Of countries for which statis-" tics of retail prices- of food are avail-* able, New Zealand ranks fourth lowest as regards percentage increase aineqf July, 1914.
