TARANAKI’S TRADE
MARKED EXPANSION SHOW FIGURES FOR THIS YEAR INCREASE IN OVERSEAS VESSELS, Since the first Home lindr berthed at New Plymouth in 1917 the total number coining to the port to date is 38, and an example of the expansion of the trade is afforded by the fact that the numbei of liners coming here during the siz months of this year (twelve) equals th<J total for the whole of last year. The l details are:— 1917 ••• «• •• .JgM fi 1918 1919 7 1920 12 1921 (six months) 12 38 The liners which have berthed here since the beginning of the year are th« Whangaratta, "West Mahwah, Kumara, Port Pine, Port Hacking, City of Wlm Chester, Australcrag, Waimate, Tregan then, Waitomo, Suffolk and Peshawur\ in addition to these steamers the largd auxiliary schooner La Merced came intq port drawing 24 feet 3in. The growth of the trade of the port! during the years from 191? to to-day is shown in the following figures (those foi 1921 being for six months only):
1921 107 56,292 17,236 73,528 • The returns in connection with th® . port for the six months ending on« Thursday show a substantial increase in’ the imports and exports compared with' the corresponding six-monthly period of the previous year. For instance there is an increase of 18,519 tons in the imports handled and 6127 tons in exports./ It is very satisfactory to note that there has also been a big increase in the tonnage of vessels trading at the port, in* asmuch as while there was only an in-, crease of one in the total number th< gross tonnage increased from 122,131} tons to 179,080 tons.
