TURF TOPICS. (By “Mot a.") The postfx>ned Christchurch Hunt Club race meeting takes place to-day. Satisfactory acceptances are carded for the Rangitikei Hunt meeting, which takes place at Marton on Wednesday. Mort Avis and Lord Astolat met again at Danaevirke, and this time the Campfire gelding won with something In hand. Slgnysian won the Dannevirke Hunt Steeples from end to end, but was r.egrly down on three occasions, and gave Ran Thompson a most uncomfortable ride. Sydney papers agree that Ashley Reed handled Ulandra really well when he won the Canterbury Handicap over there on June 18. Ulandra carried 71b overweight, and went out at a long “price.” Coolpan had too much foot for the hunters te met at Dannevirke, and quickly met daylight between himself and his opponents, though the last fence nearly proved his updoing. He paid the best dividend of the day.
Projector showed a lot of pace In the Malden Plate on Wednesday, and should do better than run third next start. The winner. Lord Desmond, is a three-year-old colt by Demosthenes—Northern Rose, trained by C. Millen at Levin. The V.R.C. Grand National Hurdles, of 1750 sovs., three miles, will be run al Flemington to-day. Latest, aovices show that Telecles, Fiseom, Sandule, British Arch, and Two Blues were most fancied for the event. Backers of favorites had a day out at Dannevirke on Wednesday, Signysian, Lord Astolat, Tigerland, Sunray and Mort Avis winning, while Walmahoe paid a second dividend in the Malden. In five events first and second favorites returned dividends in their order of favoritism. Whetoki was produced twice at Dannevirke, registering two seconds. Lord Astolat ran a first and a second, and Tornea a second and a third. Gloaming is reported to be pleasing the touts at Randwick, and Sydney writers are ail busy (very busy!) trying to sort out something to extend the New Zealand-owned horse over middle distances. Kennaquhair, Richmond Main, Salitros, David and Erasmus have had their prospects discussed, ana nave been turned down. Eurythmic is considered the only horse likely to trouble Gloaming, but even he—great horse as he is—'would hardly have any show at less than a mile and a half. Anyway, It is not at all certain that Eurythmic will be produced at Randwick, so that Gloaming’s chief opponent in the Craven Plate may be Greenstead, who holds, with Cetigne, the Australian record of 2.4% for ten furlongs. The appearance of entrtles for the classics of 1922 gives us another opportunity to study new racehorse nomenclature, and the .coming year’s batch of two-year-olds appear to be, on the whole, as wretchedly named as ever. Str Geo. Clifford’s representatives are generally Kell named, and the selection of “Balderdash” for a daughter of Absurd and Formless is about the best. “Swallowflight” (Autumnus —Flitaway), “Sharp Burst” (Autumnus —Fleetfoot), and “Boroder Raid" (Sanquhar—Joepardy also deserves honorable ; mention. Mr. B. Joli scores with “The Dunce,” by Absurd—Graduate, and “Bohny Sox" (Boniform—Puttee, but “Uncle Alex” (Bezonlan — . Bonny Helen) has a personal touch. Nothing else amongst the Taranaki division api pears to merit notice. The Absurds are generally eas'ly named, , and “Epitaph," by Absurd—Eulogy, “Veil," by Absurd—Cowl, “Farceur," by Absurd—Our Lady, and “April Folly," by Absurd—Martian Princess, are about the best of this year’s crowd. i “Ardour” is the name selected by Mr. J. 1 Griggs for the Ally by Gay Lad—Mettle; and a brace of well-named Martians are “Wartune," out of Samisen, and “Warseer,” out of Intelligence. "Bumptious,” by Kilboy— Conceit; “Trill," by Kilboy—Tetrazzini; and “Slayer,” by Kilboy—Corinthia, also read well. Others that strike the eye as fairly well named are “Good Sport" (Polydamon— Amusement) ; “Morose" (Feramorz —Prosy) ; and “Menthe" (Kilboy—Mint Queen), but the writer has no time for comi>ounded names, however sweet sounding they may be. Examples of th’s class of nomenclature are:— j "Bonomel" (Boniform—Philomel) ; “Bonrina" i (Boniform—Desrina) ; “Martis (Martian—Eos); I and “Tressayr" Tressady—Ayrshire Maid). I Wellington weights appeared yesterday, and i are now engaging what little Interest at pre- ; sent lies outside the b'g fight and the third Jssbs
the weights down in the Wellington Steeples, and with 12.11 against his name Coalition cannot be said to weighted out of it. In fact he should have a royal show. Lochella has got in well with 12.4, but may not be forward enough to reproduce h!s best form this month. Master Strowan 11.13, is said to be going along the right way, but he is hardly the horse that he was a couple of seasons ago. Multive and Luperino are both on the 11.3 mark, and the former reads the better of the pair. Corolglen 11.2, has caught it very hot, and considering that he chiefly owed his advantage over southern horses racing at Ellerslie to his ability to outpace them at the down-hill work, he might have been let In lighter. First Line is not badly treated with 11.2, but reports’ as to bis condition are not pleasing. Mattock, Luke, Omahu and Oakleigh are a dangerous quartette on 10.5 a handy weight to carry over three and a quarter cnlJes. Of those lower down. Old Mungindl 10.1, Khartoum 9.7, and Hautawa 9.7 may run best. On the whole it is an excellent handicap, and early pickers may find it hard to choose between Coalition, Multive, Mattock, Luke, and Omahu. Vagabond, who will race in Mr. Kemball’s colors, has earned top weight, 11.8, in the Parliamentary Handicap. Molyneaux 11.4, may be too near the old horse, and Bindle 10.12 may not get the distance. 'Strategy reads well at 10.9, as do Demos 9.11, Crucelle 9.8. and Battle Knight 94. Fisher (12st.) should hold Looehella and Gamecock (each 11.12) safe In the Winter Hurdles, but Multive 11.4, Hyginas 1.0, and Sea Deil 9.12 should all be troublesome. Amongst the hack ’chasers Tigerland 10.2, Hautawa 10.13, Yankee Jack 11.11, and Otauru Kid 10.7, read well. The quartette have pace, and Trentham country should not trouble such well schooled jumpers. Tigerland looks like turning out a top-notcher. The Stewards’ Handicap at Wellington is one that presents many d'JHculties. Bindle Is asked a big question to carry 11.9, and Mustard Pot 10.11, and Income 10,7 should hold him safe Possibly the light-weight division may be the most dangerous, and if so Amber Tips 9.10, and Pure Laziness 9.0 cannot be overlooked. The Steeplechasers’ flat race, two miles and a quarter, will see Omahu, Gladful and Mattock in demand, and the first-named should start favorite, if reserved for the race. Kipling, and the imported Counter Attack, who is said to jumi well, are nicely placed in the Victoria Hurdles, though with so many new horses engaged the result is very open. Mort Avis (11.7) is well cared for In the Te Aro Handicap, and may find Spook 11.5, Eistedfodd 10.11, and Lord Astolat 10.8 hard to d'spose of. THE AUCKLAND SEASON. The total amount speculated on the totalisator by the racing public at all the meetings held in Auckland and suburbs this season was £2,239,802 10s, compared with £1,804,798 last year, and £1,141,298 in the previous year. Of this sum the Auckland Racing Club heads the list with £1,146,480, the AuckAwl Trotting Club being naxt with £3GS,6o-* _vs, followed by the Taka puna Jockey Club with j £279,023 10s, Avondale Jockey Club with ! £250,806, and Otahuhu Trotting Club with j £188,809 10s. In the 1919-20 racing season • the Auckland Racing Club held a special I meeting .Jn honor of the visit of the Prince lof Wales, when £77,476 passed through the • machine. This season without any extra days, the A.K.C.’s total exceeds that of last season's by £94,334. During the present season two-year-olds have won £36,510 in stakes in the Dominion. 1 This amount was divided among eighty-one ' horses, the progeny of thirty-five sires. The list was easily headed by Absurd, who had twelve representatives in the money, winning £12,685. Martian was second with £4160. earned by six of his stock. Then there was another b.'g drop, Mountain Knight being in third place with £1920, earned by four representatives. Following this came Kilbroney £1720, Autumnus £1720, All Black £1675, Nassau £1290, Wolawa £lll5, Royal Sou't £lO7O, Sutala £lO4O, and Boniform £1033. i Twenty-two sires in the list had only one money-earning representative, aunong them being Autumnus, all of whose money was won i by Winning Hit, and Royal Soult, who owed his ’ position entirely to /Oranga.
