VISIT OF THE SPRINGBOKS. *

MATCH AGAINST TARANAKI. The president of the Taranaki Rugby Union reported to the (management c,i>mmittee on Wednesday evening regarding the progress of arrangements for the visit to New Plymouth of tho South African footballers, who, by present arrangements, will play Taranaki on July 16.

Steps are being taken to have an impressive Maori welcome at Pukckura Park prior to the match. A stand to scat 500 people kns l*een obtained, and it will remain the property of the Rugby Union for use on future occasion?. Other seating that can be. obtained will bring the total to 800, and when booking, is commenced seats will be allotted in order of application until all are disposed of. The terraces will enable thousands to obtain a good view of tho match. Control of the gates and of traffic at the entrance will be no light task, but plans in this connection are already being worked out. Tickets will be sold In various parts of Taranaki before the day of the match. The railway authorities will have a busy day, as practically the whole countryside as fur south as Hawera and beyond will have to be brought into New Plymouth before the match and taken away afterwards. The South Africans are to bo given an opportunity of seeing as unuch as possible of the province. There is no doubt that they will be given an enthusiastic welcome on arrival in New Plymouth on the Thursday evening, and the programme, so far as now mapped out, provides for a brief civic welcome from the balcony of the Criterion Hotel, where the visitors stay. For the Friday it is proposed to ask car-owners, particularly farmers in the surrounding district, to take tho South Africans for a quiet drive; there will be nothing formal on ttat day, which precedes the match, and the same will apply to the Saturday morning. After the match the teams will dine together, and some social gathering will follow. A visit to the North Egmont Hostelry will be made on the Sunday. The New Zealand Rugby Union has been asked to allow the South Africans to stay, in Taranaki until the afternoon of Monday, so that they may be motored through the province and leave Hawera for Wanganui towards the close of the day.

STRATFORD BENEFIT MATCH, A football match in aid of the Stratford Hospital funds was held at Stratford yesterday, the law clerks, land agents, and banks playing the commercial firms. THE ASSOCIATION GAME. A NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB FORMED. A meeting of those interested in the formation of an Association Footbull Club in New Plymouth was held in the Soldiers’ Club last night. Mr. G. E. Roper presided over an attendance of 25.

Tie chairman complimented the team that played on Wednesday on their good game, and expressed the hope that it would be the forerunner of many such games. After a short discussion, Mr. F. Julian moved that the meeting form itself into a club, to be called the New Plymouth Association Football Club. This was seconded by Mr. J. Erskine and carried. Tho following officers were elected:—Patron, Dr. Walker; president, Mr. G. E. Roper; secretary and treasurer, Mr. J. B. Erskine; executive, Messrs. H. Sheppard, .1. Valle, E. A. Elliott, A. Howlett, E. A. Hupie, F. Julian, and J. Klnnair. The subscription was fixed at 10s Cd for seniors, and 2s 6d for juniors up to IS years. It was decided that tho club's colors be black with wtlte hoops. Air. Li. H. Dawson was appointed referee. Forty-four members were enrolled, it being decided to hold a practice at an early da: c.
