SUPPLY OF SCHOOL BOOKS.

NEW SYSTEM FAVORED. The supply of school books and stationery was discussed at the conference of Taranaki School Committees at Stratford yesterday. It was decided to approve the standardising of school books through the Dominion. Mr. C. D. Sole (Stratford) moved thas the conference urges that all school books and requisites in all primary schools throughout the Dominion should be supplied free. Mr. Chainey (Toko) seconded. Mr. Trimble favored the resolution. He stated that some years ago it was proposed to supply some school books free, but some of the school teachers and the school inspectors opposed it and the scheme was dropped. The chairman (Mr. 8. G. Smith, M.P.) stated that the Minister had estimated the cost at £45,000.

Mr. R. Masters, M.P., pointed out that the resolution would not be given effect to for years. He stated that the board had appointed a committee to go into the question of having books supplied at a lesser cost than at the present time, and ho suggested that the conference could empower its executive to confer with that committee with a view to giving relief in the near future. The resolution was carried.

The incoming executive was also recommended to confer with the Education Board Committee as suggested.
