THE LAND TAX.
MISUNDERSTANDING IN AUCKLAND. SUPER-TAX IS 33 1-3 PER CENT. A misunderstanding appears to have arisen in Auckland regarding the land tax. A Press Association telegram re- . ceived from Auckland on Wednesday reads as follows: Attention has been drawn to the fact that in the preliminary notices issued by the Commissioner of Taxes under the Land Tax Act, the supertax is stated to he 33 1-3 per cent., whereas the Finance Act of last session prescribes the same rate as under ( the Act of 1920, namely 50 per cent. <| The question is raised, what statutory authority exists for the alteration? The position is that the annual Land and Income Tax Act of 1920 provided that the super-tax should be an amount equal to 50 per cent, of the land tax payable under the graduatedjscale. the Land and Income Tax Amendment Act, also passed during the 1920 provided a new scale of land tax for thA year commencing April 1, 1921, and sub* sequent years, and the super-tax to bej added to that scale was 33 1-3 per The preliminary notices now being is< sued by the Commissioner of Taxefc governed by the amending Act of*l92o| and the super-tax, therefore, is properly 33 1-3 per cent.—Dominion. k
