SHIPPING SCHEMES.

INFORMATION BEING AWAITED. MR. MASSEY’S INQUIRIES. The schemes drafted by the Producers’ Committee and tbe freezing companies in connection with shipping have not made much progress recently. The suggestions of the interested bodies, including the proposal for the creation of a Mercantile Shipping Board on which the Government and the producers would be represented, have been placed before the Government. It is understood, however. that the Government will not be ready to make any definite move before the Prime Minister returns from London, since it is anticipated that Mr. Massey will have been able .to gather important information bearing upon New Zealand’s shipping problem. It will be remembered that some time ago the shipping companies offered to charter ships to the New Zealand Government at blue book rates. Consideration of this offer was held over until fuller information could be obtained from London, and in the .meantime conditions have changed considerably. One of the suggestions that has been made is that New Zealand should co-operate with Australia in arranging for independent shipipng. No definite move has been made in this direction, but it is possible that Mr. Massey and Mr. Hughes will discuss the matter before they separate.
