NEW TEACHERS.

LARGE NUMBER ‘PREPARING. IMPORTANCE OF HEALTH Telegraph —Pres* Association. Wellington, Last Night. Mr. Caughley, Director of Education, is visiting the principal training college centres of the Dominion, and is al present in Dunedin, later touring, that North Island. The principal quest is in regard to the probable output of experienced teachers from the colleges within the next year or two. The Hon. C. J. Parr (Minister of Education) said to-day that practically the whole success of education and the contemplated reforms depends on the teachers. It was essential to get the right men and women for the work, and he had asked Mr. Caughley to make special enquiry into the physical appearance and health of trainees, of whom there were now nearly 1000, practically double the number of any previous year. The Minister referred to suggestions that the system of medical examinations be changed, providing instead uf education board doctors that regular school doctors in the service of the department should make the examinations. The Minister added that the director would also make enquiries into the suggestions of some headmasters that young teachers emerge from the colleges with excellent ideals and ample instruction in the theory of pedagogy* but not sufficiently strong in the prac* tical aide of the work.
