NEW HOPE.

, IRISH iviAY HAVE PEACE. THE OFFER TO DE VALERA. HOPE REPLACES DESPAIR. By Tel egraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright Received June 27, 7.55 p.m. London, June 20. The Dublin correspondent of ths Times says Ireland regards Mr. Lloyd George’s invitation as a direct outcome of the King’s Belfast speech, and it has changed the whole face of the political situation, causing a reaction in pub’ic opinion from despair to profound relief and lively hope. It is expected De Valera and his colleagues will attend the conference and invite Cabinet to state the maximum concessions for submission to the Dail (Eireann. If all goes well a military truce will be then arranged and the terms of a settlement will be discussed at a joint sitting of the Northern Parliament and representatives of Southern Ireland. Public opinion believes that if the two bodies are brought together a settlement will be reached. The Times lobbyist comments that Sinn Fein is well aware that the Dominions are now watching Irish affairs at closer range through the eyes of their Premiers in London, and their presence adds to the appropriateness of the summoning of Irishmen to a conference to end the age-old feud. The eyes of the Empire are now turned to Ireland, and the Sinn Fein reply will profoundly influence Dominion opinion. The Daily Maili states that Cabinet has approved Mr. Lloyd George’s letters to De Valera and Sir James Craig. The latter summons the Ulster Cabinet to meet on the 28th instant to consider the invitation, while De Valera is consulting the Sinn Fein leaders. It is expected that both parties will accept. The Daily Mail’s Dublin correspondent telegraphs that De Valera certainly will, provided Mr. Lloyd George gives a more binding guarantee of safety for Michael Collins, Richard Mulcahey and any other prominent Republicans he may choose to bring.—Times and United Services. EXTREMISTS "DESPERATE. SINN FEINAT BAY. London. June 25. The Dublin correspondent of The Times states that the position in Ireland was never worse. Sinn Fein is at bay and an increase of desperate crimes is feared. The extremists have captured the moderates, who favored peace two months ago. ■» The new policy of desperation is attributable to the Ulster elections and the formation of a Government, which has brought about the hated partition, destroyed hopes of a republic and aroused passionate antipathy.—Times.
