The weather was very hot for the match between the Australians and Nottingham. The attendance was 14,000. The wicket was perfect. • Armstrong, Collins, Carter and Mayna are not playing. The Notts team is: Carr, Gunn, John Gunn, Payton, Hardstaff, Lee, Richmond, Barratt, Oates, Staples, Whysall. Bardsley won the toss, and Barratt and Richmond opened the bowling. In the second over Bardsley lost hie leg stump trying to turn one to leg. Macartney was missed badly by George Dann at first slip in Barratt’s second over, and he was caught off a no-ball at short equate leg when 24. Staples replaced Barratt at 48, and John Gunn replaced Richmond after <3B minutes’ play. Macartney made fifty in 45 minutes. The bowling was very poor, and Richmond at 85 replaced John Gunn. The century was reached in just over an hour. Lee replaced Richmond at 129. Taylor, playing crisply all round the wicket, found several mulls in the fielding, and also smart picking up, but by five fours he quickly assisted Macartney to make his fifth century of the tour in 95 minutes. Staples was brought on for Richmond at 190, and 72 were added in 25 minutes—the quickest scoring of the tour. Taylor was caught at very fine leg, which was short like the first, slip on the other side of the wicket. He hit seven fours. Macartney almost wizardry lifted a left leg placed ball to the left boundary, playing back. Macartney’s strokes magnetised the spectators, and there were frequent “Ohs”. Carr relieved Barratt at 248, and six fours were made off Carr’s first over, which included a no-' ball. “We don’t want ’em” shouted the crowd when a single was not taken. Carr bwolcd one over and John Gunn replaced him. Macartney made his last hundred in fifty minutes, against frequent changes of bowling, and 200 were added after lunch in 68 minutes. Macartney hit his third sixer just after giving Barratt a barely possible chance with his left hand. Staples missed Pellew when 54 with an easy catch at mid-off, and Carr missed Macartney when 242. Hardstaff was put on and although he stopped runs at first Macartney hit three fours and a sixer off him in one over. Pellew with a single sent up 460 after 175 minutes. The fielders were tired, and oft- n unable to get down to a ball. A hundred minutes produced 290 since lunch, and Macartney made 300 out of 475 in 205 min utes. He then established a new record for any Australian in England, beating Armstrong’s 303 against Surrey in 1905. Five hundred appeared after 217 minutes’ play-—the fastest 500 in the tour. Barratt did not resume fielding, owing to a damaged finger occurring early in the game. Pellew just hit Staples close up. He hit 14 fours. Gregory got under a ball and was caught easily* at mid-off. Macartney batted 235 minutes, and hit 4 sixers, 47 fours, 3 threes and 30 twos. He was turning Hardstaff to leg when he was dismissed. His only really easy chance was when nine. June 26, 5.5 p.m. London, June 25. J'. C. White, playing against Derbyshire, took 13 wickets for 176. Notts beat Hampshire by two wickets after very exciting cricket. Hampshire, in their first innings, made 190, and Notts 412 (Whysall 96). Hampshire, in their second innings, made 507 (Mead 280 not out). Kennedy then took four of Notts wickets for 21. Whysall made 96 not out, Oates 56, and Barratt 79.
