DIPHTHERIA EPIDEMIC.
THE CHRISTCHURCH OUTBREAK. STEPS TO CHECK IT. By Telegraph —Prew Association. Christchurch, June 25. A deputation of local bodies and health authorities waited on the Hon. C. J. Parr to-day and asked for Government assistance towards the appoint-* ment of a commission of experts to in<* J vestigate the cause of the present epidemic of diphtheria. Mr. Parr replied that ail over the world in recent year’s there had been a marked increase in diphtheria. In 1918 in the Dominion the condition of things was worse than to-day. Since then there had been a decrease, but in Christchurch that had not been the case. Whatwas wanted was information about the disease, and so far as the department was concerned it was out to help them all it could. He had given instructions tliat an expert bacteriologist should come from Dunedin to assist Dr. Pearson and two extra inspectors of health would be put on in Christchurch. The idea of a commission would have to ba brought before Cabinet. He was satisfied the state of the schools was not thb main factor, and overcrowding in Christchurch was not as bad as in Wellington.
